Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on Tuesday. Both nations announced energy agreements.

Modi announced India would ratify the Paris climate change agreement this year-sooner than expected. That could help persuade other nations to follow India’s example. But there is bigger news on the nuclear power front.

Nuclear power is the key for India and many other nations to achieve their emissions reductions goals under the Paris climate agreement, which was signed in April.

The U.S. and India announced a $40 million solar finance program as well as $20 million in financing for clean energy.

“We discussed how we can ASAP bring Paris into force and how we can make sure that climate financing that’s necessary for India to be able to embark on the bold vision for solar and clean energy,” President Obama said.
