Greenland voted to leave the EU in 1982, after gaining more autonomy from Denmark and being a self-governing part of that country. It took three years to wrap up negotiations to quit.

Control of fisheries was a big motivator, nearly 90 percent of Greenland’s exports are fish. The EU now pays Greenland nearly 20 million dollars a year to fish its waters.
