Three Brazilian teenagers who grew up in one of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas are garnering global acclaim. They originate from Rio’s Vidigal favela, a slum famous for its breathtaking view of the city.

The musical group they formed is called Pearls Negras or “Black Pearls.” They are a female rap trio and they put their experiences from favela life into song. For this week’s Urban Voice segment, check out Mariana, Alice and Jennifer. Latin America’s hip hop trailblazers Pearls Negras.

Pearls Negras is playing in the U.S. this summer. They will be visiting New York, Baltimore and Chicago. It’s their second international trip after a European tour last year when they boarded a plane for the first time in their lives.
