Another setback for the Shiite government of Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki. Sunni militants have rapidly gained ground this weekend capturing two more western border crossings.
Separately, insurgents attacked a funeral near the city of Ramadi on Sunday.
The double-bombing killed at least eight people and injured 13. The funeral was for a senior army officer killed in fighting Friday.
Meantime, Iran’s top cleric is warning against U.S. intervention in Iraq as the top American diplomat tours the region.
