Iraqi soldiers investigate after people were seen running between buildings near this garage. A few bullets strike nearby, but it could be friendly fire.

An armored Humvee lays down covering fire giving us a chance to run to relative safety.

We were just searching houses around the area. This is the area just inside of Mosul when we came under fire. Luckily the bullets went just above our heads and now we’re returning fire on what is clearly ISIL remnants hiding among these buildings.

It’s like shooting at shadows. Here, ISIL’s suicide tactics appear to have changed overnight into more conventional hit and run ambushes.

Inside the city the supplies are divided up between the various units, grateful after a long battle.

“The nature of the battle was a car suicide bomber who blew himself up next to our tank and then they attacked us with drones with bombs,” Major Qusay el-Kinani from Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF) said.

These men believe ISIL’s last stand in the city’s west will be the hardest battle yet.
