Forced sterilization program in Peru leaves dark shadow for victims

Americas Now

More than 200,000 Peruvian women and men were sterilized during the government of Alberto Fujimori in the 1990s.

Fujimori is serving 25 years for human rights crimes and corruption. His daughter Keiko Fujimori narrowly lost Peru’s presidential elections in June. But her party will control the country’s
Congress just as thousands of forced sterilization victims continue the long wait for justice.

The sterilization program was allegedly set into action in an effort to control population and reduce poverty.

Peru’s most senior prosecutor has asked for a new investigation into the case. It could determine whether health ministers and former president Fujimori can be prosecuted on human rights charges for implementing the forced sterilization program.
