Last Friday the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea announced it had conducted a nuclear warhead test.

This was the country’s fifth nuclear test and most powerful so far. The DPRK has also tested a series of ballistic missiles, including two in August – one launched from a submarine and another that Pyongyang said could hit the United States.

China expressed its opposition to the latest nuclear test, the UN and other countries like Russia and the United States denounced it, too.

But, over the weekend, the DPRK said that it will continue to develop its nuclear capability despite global condemnation and the threat of more sanctions from the international community.

For more on China and the international reaction to the tests, CCTV’s Han Peng reports from Beijing.

Tonight’s panel takes a look at international reaction:

  • Tong Zhao, an associate with the nuclear policy program at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy
  • Christopher Hill, a former U.S. ambassador who headed the U.S. delegation to the six-party talks on the DPRK nuclear issue
  • Eunjung Lim, lecturer on Korean studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies
