The word “tourism” conjures up pleasant thoughts of vacation and leisure. But it’s also a key component in maintaining a nation’s financial health. According to the UN’s World Tourism Organization, the travel industry generates as much revenue to a country’s economy as exports of goods. In some cases it generates even more.

One country that banks on tourism is Cuba. The industry earns the nation almost 2 billion dollars a year in foreign currency. And with renewed relations with the United States increasing its number of tourists, Cuba is trying to attract a broader range of visitors.
