Thousands flee from Mosul as gov’t forces try to retake city

Iraqi government forces tried to recapture Mosul, the country’s second largest city, causing many people to flee several weeks ahead of it. The new camps used to house new arrivals, are going through resources scarce and overcrowding problems.

CCTV’s Jack Barton reported.

These new arrivals are Sunni Muslims, who have been living in an area controlled by ISIL. ISIL treated the innocent as guilty by association and that they’re locked up behind wire fences made them unable to leave.

“There is some aid here but it’s so little. It’s too hot here see there’s no electricity, see now there is no electricity. In this tent, there are around three families living in this tent, but being here ensures the safety of your life,” Ali Mahmoud Khalaf, a displaced resident, said.

Kurdish authorities admit there are restrictions.

The situation is bad but it’s going to get much worse if the Iraqi army captures Mosul which is expected to displace up to or more than a million people.
