Rapping doctor’s unconventional approach attracts investors

Global Business

Las Vegas is a city that isn’t afraid to roll the dice. When it comes to health care, one doctor’s unconventional approach has attracted a big investor.

CCTV America’s Mark Niu reports.

Zubin Damania is an internal medicine doctor with an eccentric specialty. He’s known as ZdoggMD,rapper, singer and comedic performer whose parodies have in medical and social media terms “gone viral.”

He’s made 160 videos, taking jabs at an ailing health care system, doctors behaving badly and nurses being treated badly.

Damania’s critiques caught the attention of Tony Hsieh, the founder of one of the largest online shoe stores in the world: Zappos. Hsieh said he’d invest in a business where Damania could start from scratch to transform health care in Las Vegas, so as to serve as a model nationwide.

For an $80 flat monthly rate, patients receive medical care, access to healthy cooking classes at this demo kitchen and hands on osteopathic manipulation.

“To actually have a doctor spend a good 15 minutes laying hands is transformative for many patients,”said Damania.

There’s also a studio for Zumba, Yoga and plenty of core strengthening activities.

Patients and doctors are encouraged to look at medical records together and communicate on video chat or text.

Melat Demeke, head of operations in Turntable Health, is also a patient. “I was just able to text my doctor and say hey, you know I had this happen and this okay, and he was actually texting me all throughout the night making sure everything was okay. So that access is huge,” said Demeke.

ZdoggMD’s operation to put the healthcare system under the knife continues, as he’s now working on his latest project: a satirical medical newscast.
