Americas Now correspondent Toby Muse went to a farm in Eastern Colombia where former enemies in Colombia’s Armed Conflict have been living off the land in peace.
Long before the Colombian peace talks began, hundreds of former Colombian fighters from different rebel groups decided to join forces around a farming project and rebuild their lives.
Toby Muse meets with these men who voluntarily put away their weapons to grow pineapples at La Fortuna farm in Yopal, Colombia. They talk to Toby about the challenges of forgiveness and reintegration.
Many of the former fighters have had limited or zero options in finding work as employers resist hiring those with a guerrilla past. The pineapple farm serves as a good example of how harmony can be achieved in a post-conflict environment.
According to the country’s agency for reintegration more than 26-thousand Colombians have gone through the process of demobilization and assimilation into society.
