Chinese competition could threaten Mexican hand-made guitar industry

Global Business

In the Sierra Madre Mountains of western Mexico, a small town has built a reputation for world-class acoustic guitars, all made painstakingly by hand.

But increasing competition from China is forcing the townsfolk to find new ways to compete. CCTV America’s Franc Contreras reports.

Located in the western Mexican state of Michoacan, the town of Paracho is known worldwide for its hand-made guitars.

In recent years, Paracho has been facing increasing competition from China.

These imported guitars are aimed at entry-level students seeking affordable prices. For some, the competition creates fear, while others welcome the challenge.
