Protests grow across Argentina against new cases of gender violence

Protests across Latin America are putting gender violence on the public agenda.

In Brazil, there was the case of a young girl raped by over 30 men. In Argentina, the murder of three 12 year-old girls has rattled a nation already overwhelmed by the amount of violence against women.

The murder of 14 year-old Chiara Paez prompted nationwide protests in Argentina a year ago.

Her death focused attention to this fact: one woman is killed every 30 hours in this country. Paez’s death began the movement “Ni Una Menos,” or “Not One Woman Less.”

Argentines marched once again in protest of the dramatic situation facing women.

A report by the organization Casa del Encuentro found that in the past 12 months, 275 women have been killed in Argentina.

Gigi Scoles on growing protests against gender violence in Latin America

The United Nations recently reported the results of a survey showing nearly 1 in 4 men in the Asia Pacific region have acknowledged raping a woman.

For more about this, CCTV America’s Elaine Reyes spoke to Gigi Scoles, director of human rights at the non-profit organization Vital Voices.
