Greece dismantles largest refugee camps on border

Greece’s largest refugee camp on the Macedonian border is getting dismantled. Police have started to clear out Idomeni a process that could take about a week.

Thousands of migrants have camped there in tents, for months.

CCTV America’s Roee Ruttenberg reports.

Authorities warned that the migrants would have to leave, but noted they would not use force to remove them.

More than 8,000 people, many of them from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan were being removed from the camps.

The migrants have been camped out at Idomeni ever since the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, to the north, shut its border with Greece back in March.

Skopje’s moves came after other European capitals announced tough restrictions meant to stem the flow of migrants into northern Europe.

On Tuesday, police could be seen calmly boarding the migrants onto dozens of buses.

They said the operation could take up to ten days. All of the migrants are due to be relocated south, to Thessaloniki, to what Greece officials are calling ‘hospitality centers.’
