KFC nail polish campaign causes stir on Hong Kong social media

Global Business

KFC’s publicity stunt in Hong Kong, where the company offered edible nail polish flavored like their chicken, became a viral sensation on the internet.

CCTV’s Pamela Ambler went to find out what was behind the marketing campaign.

The debate continues online after KFC released nail polish, flavored like its famous fried chicken.

Advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather is behind the campaign, aimed at giving the restaurant a leg up in a crowded market for fast food.

Part of what KFC wanted to achieve was to make their slogan resonate with young people. So far, the lacquer’s ad has recorded more than 200 million online views.

Ogilvy said the KFC nail polish is not available for sale or for sample, it was only given to social media influencers.

While Yum Brands Inc., owner of KFC and Pizza Hut may be the largest fast food company in China, McDonald’s dominates the Hong Kong scene.
