A good neighbor gives at-risk kids a safe haven in Guatemala

Americas Now

AN GAME CHANGER JUAN PABLO 6

When gang violence and crime overtake a community, they often take away opportunities from its citizens as well. Such is the case in Guatemala, one of Latin America’s most dangerous countries. The options for young people can be especially limited. Many of their parents are out of work and the hope for a good future is bleak.

One Guatemalan teacher was so disturbed by the effect of crime on his city’s youth, he took matters into his own hands and did something truly benevolent. He opened up his own house to the area’s kids and converted it into a community center for them. It provides children with an education, teaches them vocational skills and gives them a safe place to play.

For our “Americas Now” Game Changer segment this week, meet the founder of Los Patojos – Juan Pablo Romero.

Romero’s program has been so successful, he has opened an even bigger community center. This one features a concert hall, bakery and a health clinic.

Watch this week’s Game Changer and see how the actions of one person can make a difference.
