The U.S. retail landscape is a study in contradictions.

On one hand you have the traditional department stores like Macy’s, Target and Nordstrom. That segment seems to be in steep decline.

Just this past week, concerns over their profit outlook have rung investor alarm bells in Wall Street.

Macy’s stock has taken it on the chin in recent days after it said first quarter sales fell nearly seven percent. But other types of retailers are going strong, namely Amazon.
