Egypt’s tourism continues to suffer low visitor turnout

Egypt’s tourism industry is in deep trouble. The number of visitors has almost halved in the first three months of this year.

It never properly recovered from the Arab Spring. And Islamic State’s shooting down of a Russian jet has contributed to another huge drop in tourists. CCTV’s Adel EL Mahrouky reports.

Egypt’s tourism industry brought the country nearly $9 billion last year, but it was not enough to stop the snowballing drop of the Egyptian pound against the U.S. dollar.

The industry has been under pressure since 2011, and with much less foreign currency expected this year, economic damage can only get worse.

As long as Russia and Europe keep their travel ban to Egypt, the country will keep missing over 80 percent of its usual visitors. Tourism for the country will continue its race against time from shutting down and it will remain a pessimistic future for the county’s tourism.
