April 25 marks World Malaria Day. Caused by mosquito-borne parasites, malaria causes hundreds of thousands of deaths every year, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa with young children disproportionately affected.

A decade of scaled up efforts in the worst-affected countries has reduced malaria fatalities but those programs are expensive to run.

Due to public spending cuts, Ghana’s overall health budget has been tight over the past few years. There are now fewer government funded malaria programs, making many turn to non-profits and charities to help with testing and prevention.

Chinese factory helps make mosquito nets in Uganda to fight malaria

A Chinese factory in Uganda has started producing mosquito nets to help government cut importation costs. Uganda recently distributed free mosquito nets to households in the fight against malaria. The disease accounts for the biggest share of the country’s health budget.

CCTV Africa’s Michael Baleke reports.

The nets are insecticide-treated to ward off mosquitoes, and homes throughout Uganda are eagerly awaiting them.
