Cuba Party Congress wraps up its 3rd day of meetings

Cuba’s main policy making body, the Communist Party Congress, completed its third day of discussions on whether to update its old Soviet style economic model.

Both foreign investors and the island’s private sector remain uncertain as to what the future holds.

As the Seventh Communist Party Congress meets to map out the country’s economic direction, many in the fledgling private sector wonder what their role will be and whether they will be allowed to grow.

President Raul Castro told the delegates the non-state sector is providing necessary services and should not be discriminated against.

The new wholesale rules, though, suggest that many in the bureaucracy think otherwise. Potential foreign investors are also concerned about mixed signals and the business climate here.

But a younger generation may soon be deciding matters.

“We propose an age limit of 60 for elected members of the Central Committee and 70 for top leaders of the Communist Party,” President Raul Castro said.

Congress has approved the proposal which will be implemented over the next five years.
