Music helps a community in Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountains

Americas Now

A world-class concert pianist made a visit to Mexico’s mountains in the 1980’s and loved it so much, he never left.

Meet this week’s Game Changer on “Americas Now” Romayne Wheeler.

Romayne traveled to Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountains seeking inspiration and inspiration is exactly what he found. He discovered an indigenous tribe called the Raramuri who live among this rugged terrain of northwest Mexico. Most of them live within their traditions and use the ancient ways taught by their ancestors. The pianist was charmed by their music and their menatilty. Now he supports the Raramuri with his music and his foundation which is bringing resources to them.

The non-profit organization is building a shelter next to a school built for the Raramuri so that children from far away communities can live and study there during the week and build their futures.
