Mixed emotions for Syrians ahead of the peace talks in Geneva

World Today

Syrian opposition leaders have offered to share power with some members of the country’s current government, but only without President Bashar al-Assad.

Assad’s delegation has joined the U.N. led peace talks in Geneva.

The negotiations have been overshadowed by violence and a worsening humanitarian situation.

Structures were put in place back in February to ensure that aid would flow even if the cessation of hostilities collapsed. It hasn’t fallen apart yet but humanitarian assistance is already struggling to reach some civilians who need it most in the region.
