Dongguan rolls out new manufacturing technology despite concerns of shutdowns

Dongguan city is known as Guangdong province’s economic powerhouse, and has been dubbed the “world’s factory”. Some reports say it saw a wave of factory shutdowns last year. Workers here say that to the contrary, the industrial city is boasting of a wave of hi-tech advancement.

CCTV’s He Weiwei reports.

A new plastic like material is rolling off the factory floor of a Guangdong business. Unlike ordinary plastic, the new material can be decomposed within a certain period, according to customers’ requirements.

The company says it currently has no more than five counterparts in the world, and is quite ambitious about the product’s potential on the market.

“Our global market share has surpassed 15 percent. That number will double within the next five years, as we are to establish more factories to raise productivity. I’m quite confident on that,” said He Jiangxiong the president of Dongguan Xionglin Technology.
This is not an isolated example. There are in fact over 60,000 advanced manufacturers in the city. Some business reports last year claimed Dongguan had experienced a “wave” of factory shutdowns, but local authorities say such reports were biased.

Now the city is rolling out more and more policies to attract high-end companies and achieve its goal of being the world’s leading advanced manufacturing base.
