The Heat: UN sponsored peace talks in Geneva

The Heat

On Monday, United Nations special envoy Staffan de Mistura declared that indirect talks between the Syrian government and the opposition had officially begun in Geneva.

Just 24 hours later that was anything but certain. The latest push to end the Syrian conflict appeared to fall apart as the Assad government denied formal talks had started.
The opposition cancelled a meeting with the U.N. envoy, following intense Russian air strikes near the town of Aleppo.

CCTV America’s Jack Barton reports.

The Heat was joined by the following guests:

  • From Damascus is Bassam Abu Abdullah. He’s the Director of the Center for Strategic Studies at Damascus University.
  • From Washington, D.C. is Rafif Jouejati. She’s the spokesperson for Local Coordination Committees in Syria, a pro-democracy network of activists.
  • From London is Ammar Waqqaf, a Syrian political analyst and the director of Gnosos which focuses on Syria and the Middle East.
