The Heat: US politics and the Iowa caucuses

Iowa’s vote in the 2016 U.S. presidential race, also known as the Iowa caucuses, is now on the books. Conservative U.S. Republican Ted Cruz defeated Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, creating a three-way competition.

Democrat Hillary Clinton barely claimed victory, after a virtual tie with her only rival on the Democratic side. Bernie Sanders is a self-proclaimed democratic socialist whose rapid rise to popularity is remarkable, and largely fueled by young people in the U.S.

The Iowa caucuses is the first official test in the nomination process for the next American President.

A record number of residents of the U.S. state of Iowa gathered Monday night to start the selection of the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees.

CCTV America’s Nathan King reports.
