Argentina tries to rebuild beef industry by boycott

Argentina is known around the world for its tango, its football and also its meat. The new government is trying to build up the beef export industry which has dropped off in the past few years. In turn domestic prices have risen sharply in recent weeks.

To stop this, officials are now asking the world’s top consumers to boycott the nation’s favorite food as prices have surged in recent weeks.

CCTV America’s Joel Richards reports from Buenos Aires.

Beef is an integral part of Argentina’s national identity and culture. The country takes pride in boasting that it raises some of the highest levels of meat in the world.
That may be tested in the coming months.

Prices rose sharply in December after the government eliminated export duties. Beef producers started taking advantage of lower taxes, preferring to sell overseas, but in the past week, the cost of cattle has fallen at the market which sets the national price.
