Government forces have been battling Kurdish militants in southeastern Turkey for months.

Most of the Kurdish fighters are associated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, a group listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU.

Turkey’s president said more than 3,000 PKK militants were killed last year in both Turkey and Northern Iraq.
