Oracle Open World 2015: it’s all about the cloud

Global Business

Nearly 60 thousand people are gathering in San Francisco to attend one of the city’s largest tech conferences: Oracle OpenWorld. The data storage and infrastructure giant is unveiling its strategy for the future and it’s all about the cloud.

Oracle predicted that within 10 years, virtually all company data would be stored in the cloud and that Oracle would be one of the dominant players supplying software and servers to run it.

Seeking to equate Oracle’s culture with that of basketball champions the Golden State Warriors, Oracle brought out Warriors COO Rick Welts to inspire the crowd. Keeping with the theme of revamping in order to win, Oracle said it has re-written 98 percent of its software services for the cloud.

“But it is a whole new landscape of competitors on a whole new foundation of technology,” said Larry Ellison, the executive chairman of Oracle. He admitted that rival SalesForce has a larger cloud business but claims Oracle’s is growing faster.

Whichever company is going to win the battle for the cloud cannot ignore security concerns. Hundreds of millions of dollars are lost to data hacking every year.

Ellison insisted security should not be something that was turned on or off, but rather it should be on all the time. He also warned of an even greater threat than stealing data, actually changing data, which could cause widespread destruction of such things as bank accounts or even air traffic control data.

Taking security to the silicon would become a vital step as more data migrates to the cloud.
