Some 2,000 experts from all over the world are gathering in Berlin to discuss the biggest threats to global health. Stronger antibiotics resistance is among the major topics at the World Health Summit. The threat is growing as bacteria known as “superbugs” have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics.

• In China, antibiotics are no longer available in drug stores without a prescription, at least in big cities.
• Doctors are required to use as little antibiotics as possible. Hospital evaluations even take usage into account.
• At Peking University First Hospital, the amount prescribed for out-patients has dropped by half since 2006.

What are superbugs?

According to U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates, around 2 million people are infected with resistant bacteria each year, killing 23,000 overall.
