Indonesia’s navy cracks down on sea piracy

World Today

A third of the global shipping trade flows through Indonesia, making its waters some of the busiest in the world. They are also some of the most dangerous.

An average of one commercial vessel is hijacked by pirates every two weeks in those waters. The Indonesian navy is facing the problem head on, in an effort to stem the worrying trend.

During the first six months of this year, there have been 79 pirate attacks in Southeast Asia. This number is more than half of the world’s 134 reported pirate attacks in that same period.

CCTV’s Andy Saputra filed this report from Indonesia.
