Lisa Maatz on the importance of educating women

CCTV America’s Philip TK Yin interviewed Lisa Maatz, vice president of Government Relations at the American Association of University Women about the role education of women plays in improving the economic situation of communities, families and countries.

“Equal pay and access to capital is a huge issue around the world. One of the things that a lot of these NGOs have found, is that if you really want to improve a family’s economic situation, improve the community and countries economic situation; you work with the women. Because when you educate a woman, you educate the whole family; when you educate a man, he is not necessarily spreading the whole wealth the way that women do, for a variety of reasons,” she said.

“So once you get the basics met, and let’s be clear there are still people who do not have enough food or don’t have good healthcare, the next thing is education for women. When you educate women, not only do they wait longer to have children, they have fewer children, they are much more likely to be economically sufficient and the entire community and entire country benefits. Investing in women is a smart economic move, no matter what country you are in.”
