Mumbai has seen an influx of Chinese as demand for diamonds in China soars. India cuts and polishes 80 percent of diamonds in the world and for traders there, it also brings economic benefits.

  • Chinese customers’ purchasing volume makes up 20 to 25 percent of the total diamond sales that happen from Mumbai.
  • To make business easier, the diamond houses have encouraged their staff to learn to speak mandarin.
  • The trend has given rise to many mandarin schools with the idea being to help bridge the cultural and language barriers between China and India.
