A “hair-raising” competition in Cali, Colombia

Americas Now

It’s an annual celebration of Colombian heritage with emphasis on the syllable hair.

Each year in the city of Cali, Afro-Colombians hold a hairstyling contest. It’s a fun way to remember their African roots and stay in touch with their identity. Hairdressers use ribbons, buttons and flowers to add color and ornamentation to hair.

The public is allowed to get their hair braided as well, even if they are not participants in the competition. Take a look at some Afro-hairdressers at work creating hairstyles that remember slavery and praise freedom.
