Ancient village in China threatened by terrible flooding

World Today

The largest ancient village of the Dong ethnic group, Zhaoxing, is at stake since heavy rain began Thursday in China. It’s one of the most serious downpours to hit the historic area in decades. Xu Geng filed this report from south China.

Buildings that are many centuries-old are in danger of being under water. Home owners and construction workers are putting forth as much effort as possible to save the historic homes. Floodwaters are rising rapidly, endangering hundreds of students in schools. Classes and exams are being called off after parts of campuses were flooded. Parents and police quickly arrived at school to make sure some 200 students were able to evacuate safely. Roads in Liping County have been washed away making it very difficult for disaster relief efforts. Experts say this may not end any time soon, with the downpour alert set to remain in effect for days to come in many regions.
