Cancer has been the leading cause of death for Beijing residents over the past eight years, said the Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning on Monday.

For every 100,000 people in the Chinese capital, over 160 died of cancer in 2014, accounting for 27.1 percent of total deaths in the city, an increase of 2.3 percent compared to 2013, according to a 2014 report on health conditions of Beijing residents released by the health authority on Monday.

The report lists lung cancer, liver cancer, and colorectal and anal cancer as the top types of cancer seen last year.

The report also said the proportion of the elderly population in Beijing is increasing. Over 3.01 million people were over the age of 60 in 2014, making up 22.6 percent of the total population.
