Lampedusa: Gateway to Europe

World Today

Migrants from North Africa and the Middle East are crossing the Mediterranean in record numbers with more than 100,000 so far this year, according to the UN’s refugee agency. Their aim is often to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa, historically a gateway into Europe. The influx is bringing intense pressure on the island. CCTV’s Stephanie Freid filed this report from Lampedusa.
