Americas Now

Guelaguetza is one of the most festive times of year for Mexico’s indigenous. For two weeks every July, people from the Mexican state of Oaxaca gather in the city of the same name for traditional singing and dancing. It is seen as a way to keep tradition alive through the passing of time in the constantly changing environment of the modern world.

Additionally, the economic boom that the festival creates is extremely important to the region’s economy. Life is often difficult for Mexico’s indigenous people. 80 percent of the 13 million people still live in poverty, according to the International Monetary Fund. This festival brings 135,000 visitors to Oaxaca and contributes $20 million to the state in only 10 days.
