Film explores isolated Kogi tribe in Colombia

Americas Now

Hidden from the modern world, deep in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada mountain range live one of the most isolated tribes in the world. The Kogi are one of the few surviving tribes related to the Incan and Aztec civilizations. They live in accordance with the laws of nature and believe it is their duty to make sure the natural world is protected. Recently, their lives have been changing. Over the last few decades, developers have encroached on their once pristine landscape. Now, they are breaking from tradition to ask for help from the outside world.

Jean-Paul Mertinez is a British filmmaker who followed the Kogi to get their assessment of the earth. His upcoming film, “Aluna”, followed the Kogi and examined their belief system and their relationship with the earth. Mertinez shares the Kogi way of life, how they’re adapting alongside the modern world and what kind of impact he hopes the film will have.
