The Mexican capital’s largest pre-Hispanic celebration takes place on the day the city was founded by the Aztecs nearly 700 years ago.

The legend says that the wandering Aztecs settled on the lake when they saw the sacred omen of an eagle perched on a cactus while devouring a snake.

At the city plaza, Aztec dancers converge 500 years after the Spanish conquest to keep some of the ancient traditions alive.

Increasing amounts of Mexicans are reconnecting with the country’s indigenous culture. There are 400 courses on the Aztec language Nahuatl in Mexico City alone.
