‘Day of Rage’ protests in West Bank turn violent

World Today

Thousands protested in the West Bank after Fatah, a Hamas rival group, called for solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. CCTV-America’s Jim Spellman reports.

In response to Fatah’s call for a “Day of Rage,” protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli forces on the streets of the West Bank. In response, the Israeli forces used rubber bullets and later live ammunition. Several Palestinians were killed in the clashes.

After 16 Palestinians were killed in an attack on a UN shelter in Gaza, protests throughout the Muslim world have intensified. In the U.S., many lawmakers are backing Israel and blaming Hamas for the violence.

Meanwhile, the 12-hour cease-fire proposed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is set to begin Saturday even though tensions have escalated in areas not directly affected by the violence.
